“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”
“When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.” — Viktor E. Frankl, Man’s Search for Meaning
“To be fully alive, fully human, and completely awake is to be continually thrown out of the nest." — Pema Chodron, When Things Fall Apart: Heart Advice for Difficult Times
These quotes will tell you a great deal about how I envision the human condition, and what I might bring to therapy. I view life as a spectrum of change – some good, some bad, and a great deal of unknowns. Though there is (for good reason) much written about childhood development, we do not stop developing after childhood. Life continually brings new challenges and successes to us: life events and circumstances that can contribute to periods of serious distress – but also potentially meaningful personal growth.
Past clients have described me as someone who really listened and conveyed sincere concern, but who was also not afraid to say what they needed to hear. If you work with me, I will partner with you to identify your strengths and to empower you along the way to greater insight. We will always look for hope and positivity even when they may be hard to find. In addition to traditional talk therapy, I love using non-traditional methods such as listening to music, reading poetry, even being silly when we could use a laugh.
While I welcome clients with all kinds of presenting concerns, you may be interested to know my areas of specialty. These include military deployment/return/discharge; relationship loss; major life changes; medical crises; grief and loss; and the treatment of anxiety disorders. Populations whom I consider specialties in my clinic include women, military veterans & family members, immigrants and children of immigrants, and the LGBTQ community.
In my work with clients, I am flexible and open to change within the therapeutic process. I utilize a variety of techniques, depending on the client’s preferences, my professional judgment, and what I believe will be most helpful. When working with me in therapy, I may employ one or a combination of the following techniques/orientations: mind-body work, cognitive-behavioral, existential, positive psychology, emotionally focused therapy, and good old-fashioned supportive talk therapy. Setting goals is important to guide us through the process, and I believe that anyone has the capacity to change and grow, no matter what their life circumstances may be.
